Caregivers’ Chatroom

A Caregivers’ Chatroom is a place for caregivers to come and find a bit of respite and resources. Respite care provides temporary relief for a primary caregiver. Take a break and come to your safe haven, a caregivers’ chatroom, for some understanding and empathy.

How do I respond to comments from caregivers going through a rough time with a difficult loved one and placing their emotional health in peril?

Anita Henson

It can be difficult when you are caring for a difficult parent, and it’s essential to care for yourself during such times. Acknowledge the stress that they are under and provide the support they need in the form of understanding and empathy. Offer resources, such as counseling, support groups, and respite services that might help relieve some of their stress. Encourage them to take care of themselves and take some time away from caregiving to focus on their needs. Assure them that caregiving is hard work and suggest positive coping mechanisms, including mindfulness, relaxation practices, physical activity, or whatever works best for them. Finally, remind them that it’s okay to ask for help.

I received the advice above from my caregiver coach, Jill Armijo.
