Paws For Caregivers

What is good about having a pet?

When I started caregiving for my parents, someone told me that a support dog would be a good benefit for us since I was a long distance caregiver. We had dogs already and we called them our Paws for Caregivers. They provide companionship, and it helps us to be connected. Our Paws were converted to emotional support dogs.

I cared from my parents many miles away and had to fly in after leaving my home, my husband, and our paws behind. They helped to reduce the stress and anxiety levels and my depression.

I couldn’t take them with me. They stayed with my husband and provided support for him while I was away. When I flew in, I received my hugs and they were so happy to see me. I looked forward to that trip every month.

My mom‘s friend was 96 at the time and lived a few miles away from them. She was doing well and had a support dog; her little mixed AZ as she called him. He was an excellent guard dog.

Caregiving can be very stressful and I suggest everyone have a support pet of some kind during your caregiver journeyif possible, Dad was allergic and I couldn’t have one, but I knew I’d be greeted with love and affection once I stepped in the door when I went home.
