Today is my parents’ anniversary. They have been married 71 years by the church. They have another anniversary at which time they had eloped 17 months earlier in 1947.
Mom and Dad met in 1945. Mom was 15 and Dad was 17. They were both in high school. At that time, there were a few high schools in town and this high school was the closest to either one even though they lived several miles from each other. Mom would walk to her grandmother’s house after school.
Dad joined the army in 1945 and Mom waited for him. 2 years later they married. They eloped because Mom’s parents did not approve of Dad immediately. After all he was in the army and was older.
